VISIONSWITCH - A transnational cooperation project with two communities of young people from rural areas of Devon and County Kildare, Eire

Between March 2005 and March 2006, three groups of young people from Teignbridge in Devon, England and County Kildare in Ireland took part in a series of creative video making workshops, training programmes and media events in their respective countries. As part of the programme they made documentaries, short fictional films and music videos related to their lives and they planned, hosted and took part in exciting media events in their local communities. Each group took as a starting point the theme 'A Day in the life...' and used these video making processes as a lens to compare their experiences of rural life in these different districts.

The young people exchanged video messages outlining their views of each others counties and what they thought about where they lived themselves. Then eventually they met. On 15th October 2005 - 8 young people from Newbridge, County Kildare visited Christow in Teignbridge to make a music video on Dartmoor. On 11th February 2006 14 young people from across Teignbridge met their counterparts in Ballitore for a guided tour of the village and to make some 60 second short flims together.

During the length of this project the young people's work has been screened at the Ballitore Picture House Premiere, at Goff's Youth Festival, at Time Trip in the Teign Valley Hall, Christow, in venues across County Kildare and Teignbridge in the VANLAND touring exhibition space and finally at the Red Carpet Premiere at the Shaftsbury Theatre, Dawlish.

This year long transnational cooperation was facilitated by Blind Ditch (UK) and the Centre for Performing Arts (IRE). The project was made possible by the Leader + European funding programme. LEADER+ is a EU rural development initiative aimed at finding local solutions to local problems. There are 900 LEADER+ areas in Europe and 60 in the UK. Local groups are required to participate in cooperation with groups in other countries. LEADER+ is delivered locally by the Teignbridge Rural Regeneration partnership and is funded by DEFRA, European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund plus District County and National park Authorities locally.

They are lovely people

again sometime.

The successful development of projects
that bring rural areas together from different countries is one of the challenges of the EU LEADER+ programme.

This is a great opportunity for professionals from Teignbridge and County Kildare to work with young people from both countries
to develop their skills and to perhaps discover that many of the challenges and frustrations faced by young people living in rural communities are often very similar.

George Giles, Chairman of TRRP
